All posts for the month January, 2008

I’ve said it before, so I shall say it again. It’s time for the NHL commissioner needs his head examined.

If you are a hockey fan, keep reading. If not, you might want to ignore this. In the late 70’s, the Flyers picked up the name “The Broad Street Bullies.” At that time, they decided that they would worry more about physical intimidation then worry about the rules. As we all know, that’s near impossible due to the way the league has shoved the rulebook down everyone’s throats.

Anyway, I’m starting to babble. Early on in this NHL season, some Flyers players had some “questionable” calls made against them, and have received as much as 20 games for a suspension. For us Flyers fans, the word questionable was certainly MORE then questionable itself.

In the last PA hockey rivalry game versus the Pens, Pittsburg tough guy Georges Laraque gave Steve Downie one of the ugliest boarding checks I’ve seen in some time. Here is were the league and the commish, well, to be blunt, sucks.

I will say it yet again. STOP CALLING THE RESULT OF A HIT. They are setting an ugly precedence that can get out of hand fast. That precedence is that if the hit is dirty and no one gets hurt, so be it; continue to play as many games as you want. Although, even if the hit isn’t as dirty but someone gets hurt, let’s by all means suspend away! Sounds fair right?

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

My buddy TO does it again. That’s right, he cried (brutzed as us PA Dutch say) like a little kid with a skinned knee. Hahhaha, it really was quality entertainment. Any day that the Cowboys lose is a good day, and it is only amplified when they blow it in the playoffs.

Times were bad. The Flyers went on an 0-7 run. That’s no wins and 7 losses for you rookies. Times were REAL bad. But then they pulled out some changes and put in the backup goalie. That’s right, Antero Niittymaki. The goalie I have cheered for since he won the MVP of the Calder Cup playoffs in 2005. What does Nitty do?

That’s right, run a 3-0 streak against some major teams. That’s right, 3 wins and 0 losses. During the first win, Nitty captured a new Flyers team record; he stopped 54 shots versus Toronto. Then a 4-1 win versus Atlanta, and then he took quite a part in the 6-2 “schlacking” versus the dreaded New York Rangers. Sure they are in the tank right now, but the Orange And Black always lose versus the Rangers (and the Devils even more).

Times are tough and the Flyers are finally getting some of the injured staff back. Time will tell, but I like the way the boys are playing.

It never fails. Yes, I had a small rant about being happy that my work machine was 4 years old and still working perfectly. Then a new, Dual Core machine “fell into my hands.” I couldn’t help it, when hardware slows down long enough at work for me to grab, I don’t hesitate. It is a 64-bit system, but I didn’t feel like installing Gentoo all over from scratch. This install is my first Gentoo install and continues to be my longest maintained install to date. I first installed Gentoo 1.4 on December 26th, 2002 during that Christmas break. The system has slightly newer hardware since then, but has never been re-installed from scratch. That’s quite an accomplishment (in my book anyway).

At any rate, it’s an HP system with a AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4000+, 2.1GHz system. 1GB (so far, this needs an upgrade) of RAM. Some of the chips are ATI based, so I had to get an nVidia based video card. ATI and Linux just don’t play nice. Luckily, my old system was recently upgraded to SATA3.0 with 2 additional drives added, so I just moved that setup and added some extra drivers to the kernel. The hardest part seemed to be the Dual Core setup, but setting up ACPI in the kernel took care of that.
